Romans 1 proclaims the gospel as the power of God for salvation and reveals how humanity has turned from knowing God to suppressing the truth, falling into sin and standing under his righteous judgment.
Romans 2–3 shows that all people - both Gentile and Jew - stand guilty before God, because knowing the law or having religious privilege does not make us righteous; instead, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” and the only way to be justified is by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
Romans 4–5 shows that we are justified by faith, just as Abraham was, not by works or law; through Jesus Christ we have peace with God, stand in grace, rejoice even in suffering, and receive life and righteousness where Adam brought sin and death.
Romans 6–7 explains that those who are united with Christ have died to sin and are called to live a new life in him, yet still experience the ongoing struggle with sin - showing both the freedom we have in Christ and the deep need for deliverance from our sinful nature.
Romans 8 declares the freedom and assurance of those in Christ: there is now no condemnation, the Spirit gives life and power over sin, we are adopted as God’s children, and nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
